We're building the trust and infrastructure behind secondhand outdoor gear in Australia, one piece of kit at a time.
Kitt Outdoors is Australia's first reuse-as-a-service platform for the outdoor gear industry. We're in the early stages, testing in the real world, and bringing brands, retailers and outdoor communities along with us.
Quality outdoor gear sits unused in sheds, gathering dust.
Newcomers are priced out before they hit the trail.
Brands and retailers aren't part of the secondary market.
Customers who use circular services return three times more often. Every piece of gear that leaves a customer's hands still has value, to the brand and retailer behind it.
We're building the platform to bring that value back.

Co-founders
Megan Mabin and Luke Richards, who bring 20+ years' combined experience in sustainability, tech startups and product stewardship to the outdoor gear industry, founded Kitt Outdoors. They have spent their careers thinking about complex systems and how to make them more circular, and are now focused on closing the circularity gap in the outdoor gear industry.
They're working closely with the outdoor industry, brands, retailers and the people already buying, selling and trading gear, to understand how secondhand really moves. The trust and verification systems behind Kitt are being shaped by these conversations.
Most people say they want to get outside more, but few actually do. That gap, between saying and doing, isn't about wanting it enough, it's about effort versus reward. A phone offers something in seconds: no planning, no packing, just a quick dopamine hit. Getting outdoors asks more of you first: finding the gear, making the time, actually leaving the house. What it pays out is slow dopamine, a reward that only lands once you're already out there, but lasts far longer once it does.
Australians spend around 90% of their time indoors (DCCEEW), and a national survey of over 4,000 Australians found that the more connected people felt to nature, the more satisfied they were with their lives overall, with the most connected 4.6 times more likely to report the highest levels of life satisfaction than the least connected (University of Tasmania, National Nature Connection Survey, 2025). Closing that gap, making the outdoor choice the easier one, is central to what we're building.
Our vision is simple: make getting outdoors more accessible, one piece of secondhand gear at a time.
Durability is exactly why circularity suits the outdoor industry so well. Outdoor gear is built to be repairable and able to survive years of tough conditions and hard use, which makes it some of the best gear in the world to pass on to a second owner. Despite that, good quality gear still sits in garages, sheds and cupboards across Australia, gathering dust instead of getting used.
Buying secondhand today still means taking a stranger's word for it. A tent listed on Facebook Marketplace might be missing poles, and there's no way to know until it's already home. We're using AI-assisted verification to make this viable at the scale it needs to work, running checks on condition and completeness that no team of humans inspecting items one by one could match, while giving buyers the confidence to buy secondhand with certainty.
Sustainability is a natural fit for the outdoor industry. The commercial case has been proven internationally too, with customers who use circular services returning three times more often (Decathlon, 2025). Overseas, well-known brands already run their own take-back and resale programmes, but Australia's landscape is different, with a small population spread across a vast landmass making the volumes needed to run a viable programme alone hard to reach. That's why our approach is about bringing the industry together, working with those who want to be part of a shared industry offering.
Each phase is being shaped with the people and industry who'll use it.
In-person pilots and community activations, gear flea markets, gear libraries, to test real interest and volumes before investing in technology.
A shared buy-back catalogue bringing partner brands and retailers into one place, with strong verification built in from the start.
Consumer-to-consumer resale, built on the trust and verification infrastructure proven in phases one and two.
